Unrealistic expectations

I got an email from a student who was surprised she received a grade of D.

  1. Her homework score was 26%, mostly because it was rarely done.
  2. Her last test was 50.
  3. Her final exam was 66. She could not have known that, I admit.
  4. She missed approximately 23% of the classes.

I don’t think she should have been surprised at the D.

Her first two tests were 84 and 71, which probably gave her unwarranted confidence. Didn’t she have some idea that she was having problems at the end of the course? Did she ever look at the syllabus that told her that homework was a component? What did she expect?
