Obama tried to point out that in a free country, everyone should be able to practice their religion and that Muslims should have as much rights as anyone else to build a religious house of worship anywhere they can get permits. At least that is what he said after people criticized his original statement, which seemed to endorse building the mosque near Ground Zero in New York. Once Obama said anything about the topic, there was no way he could avoid offending people.
There are times when saying nothing is the only way to keep out of trouble. If parents do not like their daughter’s boyfriend, they often cannot say so. It may cause their daughter to defend him in terms that make it hard for her to give him up if she ever agrees they were right.
Politicians should be better at this than parents.
