I give my students a questionnaire at the end of each semester. This semester, one of my students complained that I didn’t give extra credit. The students who want extra credit are generally those students who are doing badly and think that extra credit might be a way for them to pass. Usually the reason they are doing badly is that they didn’t do their homework.
I don’t accept late homework. I see no reason to make more work for myself while encouraging students to get behind. Extra credit does exactly that.
Oddly enough, several students commented favorably on my homework policy. I think they realized if they do the homework when it is assigned, they don’t get lost. The only students who deserve the right to have extra credit are the ones who did all the assignments. These students are the ones least likely to need extra credit.
